BIENVENUE À MA MAISON EN FRANCE! The French Cellar Challenge

The Little Old Lady ~ who could, and did, and does. . .

Bonjour! Reader,

The Mystery Under the Stairs

Today, I'm excited to share a fascinating discovery in my 1850s stone maison de ville [townhouse] that has become my latest restoration challenge.

The Hidden Treasure

Every traditional French farmhouse has what locals call a "cellier" - essentially an old-fashioned refrigeration system built right into the house. Mine lies hidden under the stairway off my kitchen, and it holds a perplexing feature: approximately 2.5 feet (75cm) of sand where the floor should be!

This isn't a construction error or neglect. The sand was intentionally placed there as part of a brilliant traditional food preservation system. The sand layer helped:

  • Regulate temperature naturally
  • Maintain ideal humidity levels
  • Provide drainage for any moisture
  • Create perfect conditions for storing root vegetables and wine

The Challenge

For someone who walks with a cane and has mobility challenges, this sand-floored space presents a unique dilemma. I literally cannot step into it without risking being unable to get back out! Yet I'm determined to restore this historical feature while making it functional for modern use.

My renovation vision includes:

  • Carefully removing some of the original sand
  • Installing drainage rocks and gravel layers
  • Adding a breathable floor surface (perhaps reclaimed terracotta or stone pavers)
  • Creating proper wine storage and preservation shelving
  • Maintaining the natural cooling properties

Historical Context

These celliers were crucial to rural French life in the 19th century. Before refrigeration, families relied on ingenious natural methods to preserve their harvest. The sand-floored cellier was where:

  • Root vegetables were partially buried to extend freshness
  • Wine bottles were stored at ideal temperature
  • Preserves were kept cool and stable
  • Cheeses could be properly aged

What's Next?

In coming issues, I'll share my journey as I tackle this restoration challenge. I'll be documenting every step, from initial sand removal to the final installation of a proper floor that honors the space's original purpose while making it accessible.

Your Experience?

Do you have experience with traditional storage spaces? Have you renovated a cellier in your own French home? I'd love to hear your stories, suggestions, and ideas.

À bientôt,

Carolyn Smith-Kizer
